Angela Stengel is Digital Product Manager for ABC Radio and EP of the first series of ABC First Run alongside Kaitlyn Sawrey. Angela joined ABC in 2008 working for ABC Innovation, testing boundaries in content and experience delivery and breaking new ground producing projects such as Campaign Pulse, a site tracking social media trends in the 2011 Federal election. Since graduating from Macquarie University with degrees in Media and Contemporary Music, Angela has sought new ways of telling stories at FBi radio, Historic Houses Trust, Radio National, Cyclic Defrost and even courtside at the table tennis for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Despite her love for technology, Angela has realised that a compelling story should make you forget the medium.

Tell us a bit about you. How did you get to where you are today? What led you to become a storyteller?
I’ve always been more attracted to dissecting and rearranging other people’s stories, rather than creating my own stories from scratch. I got into media through a love of interviewing, asking questions and being curious about others. I’d then take great pleasure in crafting a story with their words – whether through quotes in text or, preferably, through sound for radio.

But then the internet became a thing and my digital skills were more in demand. Very pleased to have ended up in the part of ABC Radio that combines both digital and stories.

A career moment I’m proud of is …

First Run. A podcast experiment we’re talking about at Storyology.

Something or someone I’m inspired by is …

The many unsung producers who find stories for radio listeners day after day.

The time or place I’m most creative is …

Late at night.

A kind of innovation that excites me is …

Innovative workplace cultures where experimentation and friendly critique are encouraged in order to learn and improve. It’s what we’re doing in ABC Radio, inspired by lean start-up culture, very much driven by our Head of Content and Digital Strategy, Linda Bracken.

Other storytellers I admire are …

Mark Binelli, Linda Jaivin, Shaun Tan, Margaret Atwood.

I would advise my 15-year-old self …

To keep on doing the fun things, you’ll find a way to make them your life. (And also, stop being so horrible to the adults around you.)

At Storyology I can’t wait to share …

Research on podcast behaviour, particularly how we used Human Centred Design to commission new programs.

The Storyology session I’m looking forward to is …

Old dog, new tricks: The Washington Post’s marriage of storytelling and tech
